Denver Post’s Snarky Fact Check Fails: Ken Buck and Social Security

Note to Elizabeth Miller of the Denver Post: when writing a "fact check" about political candidates, you should probably try to make sure that your own statements are correct.
Consider Miller’s snarky — and obviously false — statement about the founders’ beliefs: "[U.S. [...]

Note to Elizabeth Miller of the Denver Post: when writing a "fact check" about political candidates, you should probably try to make sure that your own statements are correct.

Consider Miller’s snarky — and obviously false — statement about the founders’ beliefs: "[U.S. Senate candidate Ken] Buck called the [Social Security] program unsustainable, and said he didn’t think the nation’s founders intended to have a program like Social Security (let’s recall that these people hadn’t conceived of a fire department or a postal service, either)."

I do not know the founders’ specific views on fire departments, but no serious person thinks they "hadn’t conceived of fire departments." [August 17 update: a reader sent in a link about Benjamin Franklin's firefighting efforts.] But regarding the postal service, we have readily available evidence. Perhaps Miller has heard of a little document called the U.S. Constitution, which contains the following line (Article I, Section 8): "The Congress shall have Power To… establish Post Offices and Post Roads…"

A review of the source Miller reviews, John King’s interview with Buck, clarifies that Buck made no mention of fire departments or the postal service.

Miller’s comment is not only stupid in content, it is wildly out of place. (I suppose it’s possible that an editor inserted the comment. If so, Miller, whose name appears on the piece, can take it up with the editor. If the line is indeed Miller’s, then her editor should take up the matter with her.) A "fact check" article is supposed to evaluate the claims of a candidate, not insert the writer’s own editorial remarks.

In fact, America’s founders did not envision Social Security or anything like it. Indeed, they did not envision a federal welfare state, which is almost entirely the product of the past century. Social Security dates from 1935. So Buck’s statement on the founders’ views is entirely correct, which is all that should concern Miller for the piece in question.

It is true that, at times, Buck has seemed to criticize Social Security per se, as when he said "the idea that the federal government should be running… retirement… is fundamentally against what I believe and that is that the private sector runs programs like that far better." However, it is possible to think that while still advocating reform to save the system now that it is in existence, and that is Buck’s stated view.

I’m surprised that Miller does not reference Buck’s interview with the Denver Post’s own editorial board, which I have reviewed, in which Buck offers a specific plan for reforming Social Security.

To briefly review my own positions, I have indeed called for the privatization of the Post Office. I absolutely oppose the misnamed plan to "privatize" Social Security by transferring a portion of the funds to government-managed investment accounts. Instead, I want to truly privatize retirement planning by slowly phasing out Social Security by incrementally and continually raising the pay-out age. Perhaps Miller will note the difference between stating one’s own views and evaluating the views of others.

The biggest news from today’s GOP Assembly was the failure of the McInnis campaign to capture top line on the primary ballot. While McInnis will still be heavily favored going into the August primary, the strong Maes showing combined with Joe Gschwendtner petitioning onto the ballot could cause headaches and a chaotic three-way race.

The second biggest piece of news was the fact that J.J. Ament not only secured top line but held rival Ali Hasan off of the ballot by a comfortable margin. Ament goes on to face Walker Stapleton in the August primary.

In noteworthy, but unsurprising, news Ken Buck won a vast majority of the votes and held all minor candidates off of the ballot. There had been speculation beforehand that delegates supporting Jane Norton or Tom Wiens would try to blunt Buck’s victory by casting their vote for Cleve Tidwell or Steve Barton instead of Buck, but Buck’s 77% victory indicates this probably did not happen.

Results

Ken Buck: 77%
Cleve Tidwell: 15%

Dan Maes: 49.35%

Why do you want to be a Colorado’s next governor?
To restore a family friendly environment though the elimination of state income tax.

What is the most pressing problem facing our state and how do you plan to address it as Governor?
Jobs and budget crisis, lighten the regulations limiting logging and oil-gas production. Cut salaries rather then jobs in all government positions.

What specifically would you do to make the state more business friendly?
Make sure the Health dept allows Ethanol plants near cattle yards, assist business on the sales tax collection, eliminate personal income tax.

What do you think is the most egregious thing Governor Bill Ritter has done that you plan to change if elected in 2010?
Watched the state grow a $2 billion deficit.

Has the Republican Party failed to live up to its stated ideals in the past several years? If so, how?
If your out of work, lower taxes etc does no good, Jobs are number one. Our message needs to relate to the problems of today.

As Governor what specifically would you do to help the state recover from the recession?
Oil is $82 a barrel, our timber is dieing from beetle kill, allow more drilling and logging.

What do you bring to the job of Governor that your primary opponents do not?
Experience in what today’s companies are looking for, knowledgeable workforce, lighter regulations and taxes.

What should the state’s role be in reducing the cost of health-care? What specific things would you propose or support? What kind of laws would you oppose?
I would oppose the HIPPA laws which would help stop the spread of disease.

How are you going to deal with the state’s declining tax revenues? What specifically would you cut to balance the state budget? Would you raise taxes?
I would cut salaries or payrolls including University salaries. Switch Income tax to a Real Estate transaction tax like Florida has.

Do you think there is a Constitutional right to abortion? Explain your answer? Would you vote to make abortion illegal if you could?
I would defund abortion.

Do you think government has an obligation to legally recognize same-sex relationships with a marriage license or some other form of official recognition?
Explain your reasoning. No, Colorado Law section 14 covers best interests of the marriage to the state and children. The dockets are already overflowing from divorce, no need add to that by licensing same-sex couples. I would help make the state less stressful to families, I believe all marriages should be happy! Lets change the question to one of do you believe in overburdening our courts with homosexual divorce cases?.

Do you think gun ownership in Colorado is over regulated or under regulated?
Explain your answer. The US Supreme court might soon override anything states have done to the 2nd amendment. It seems there is a correlation to psychotropic drugs and mass shootings. I might like to see the right to bear arms as it relates to use of drugs while bearing arms.
