Adams County Assessor Gil Reyes fined over gift

Adams County Assessor Gil Reyes pleaded guilty last week and paid a $300 fine for not reporting that he accepted Colorado Rockies tickets from the vice president of a warehouse company that received huge property-tax breaks.

Reyes' potential legal problems aren't over, though.

Later this month, the state Property Taxation Division will issue its report on how Reyes handled property-assessment appeals for his top campaign contributor, industrial-warehouse company Majestic Real ty.

Those findings will influence whether Adams County District Attorney Don Quick will file criminal charges against Reyes.

"We are waiting on what they decide," Adams County DA spokeswoman Krista Flannigan said of the Property Taxation Division. "That's their area of expertise." Continue reading

We are staging in the parking lot of the Department of Youth Resources 1901 E Bridge St. in Brighton starting at 8am.

We have a truck with a flat bed trailer w/hay bales, so we need riders as well as walkers. The parade is a mile and a half in length and we are at staging area 3 and in position 23, near 19th & Bridge St in Brighton. We have several banners to be carried along with Flags, Stickers, and Candy to be passed out. This is the kick off for the Fair, and a great opportunity to show our Republican Pride.

We will be decorating the vehicles so come early. It may be a little warm so wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes. If you have your "IT'S MY PARTY SHIRT" wear it. We will also have some there for sale, $10.00 each. Parades are always really fun, so come on down.

Biography of Senator Shawn Mitchell: Senator Shawn Mitchell represents Colorado State Senate District 23 which includes Adams, Broomfield Counties along with Southwest Weld County. He was elected to the Senate in 2004 after serving three terms in the Colorado House of Representatives. He currently serves as the ranking Republican on the Health and Human Services Committee. Shawn Mitchell and his wife Yvette reside in Broomfield. They have six children, Natalie, Matthew, Kevin, Danny, Bethany, Bradley and Jeffrey. Mitchell is an avid and experienced rock climber.

Biography of Mike Littwin: I’m a columnist for the Denver Post. I came to the Post as a Page 2 columnist when the Rocky Mountain News folded and have now moved to the editorial board and the op-ed page, where I do a little less beat reporting and a little more chin scratching. I began my career covering the Virginia Squires and Dr. J in the old ABA. I worked at the Los Angeles Times and the Baltimore Sun before coming to the Rocky 14 years ago. I’ve been a news columnist, sports columnist, features columnist and op-ed columnist. In my spare time, I go home to my wife, Susie, and sometimes exchange text messages with my law-professor daughter Angie.

“Raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure”….

"The fact that we're here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. Leadership means 'The buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit."   The speaker: Then-Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., back in 2006.

Reapportionment Commission to hear public testimony on state legislative district boundaries

Although the drawing of Colorado’s Congressional district boundaries has been sent to the courts (since the state senate failed to consider redistricting legislation, abdicating their constitutional obligations), the Reapportionment Commission (charged with drawing state legislative districts) is meeting over the summer and will hear public testimony both in Denver (initially) and throughout the state (once a draft district map has been developed for review and comment).

The commission has divided the state into 7 regions for the purpose of hearing public testimony. Continue reading
